Zuckerberg's statement: "Artificial super intelligence is coming"

"Over the last few months, we've begun to see signs that our AI systems are improving themselves. For now, this progress is slow, but it's undeniable," Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a policy statement published on the company's website.
Zuckerberg stated that self-improving AI is the first step toward "artificial superintelligence" (ASI), which could surpass human cognitive abilities. ASI refers to systems that can rapidly improve themselves and be more capable than humans not just in specific areas but across a wide range of areas.
WHAT ARE AGI AND ASI?While today's AI models can perform superhuman feats in some areas, such as predicting our body's protein structure, these abilities are limited to narrow domains.
The next level up, "artificial general intelligence" (AGI), describes systems that can learn and adapt in a way similar to the human brain. ASI, on the other hand, is seen as a type of intelligence that goes beyond AGI, far surpassing human capabilities and capable of self-improvement at an exponential rate.
In the scientific world, the moment when AGI is assumed to emerge is called the “technological singularity.”
GÖDEL MACHINEThe phenomenon Zuckerberg mentioned had previously entered the radar of scientists.
In October 2024, researchers at the University of California, Santa Barbara, working on the concept of a theoretical "Gödel Machine" that could evolve by rewriting its own code, developed a concept they called a "Gödel Agent."
This system could only change its code if it could mathematically prove that the change would be beneficial.
The Gödel Agent would outperform other human-designed AIs in areas such as software development, science, mathematics, and logic.
CAUTIOUS ABOUT OPEN SOURCEWhile Zuckerberg said that ASI could be a transformative step in humanity's technological advancement and enable "discoveries unimaginable today," he also emphasized that Meta would be very careful about which models it would release as open source.
Open source means that the source code for a technological system is publicly available. This means anyone can use it to modify and improve the system. Meta has been advocating for open source policies in the field of artificial intelligence for some time.
"I'm extremely optimistic that superintelligence will accelerate human progress," Zuckerberg said, adding that the real impact will be that people can achieve their goals, create the world they want, and realize their potential by possessing their own personal superintelligence.
